Introduction
Haines Science Camp was founded in 2014 by me, Tracy Wirak. Last summer I ran 3 weeks of summer camp in Haines, Alaska. The camp is based out of the Sheldon Museum. We did a variety of activities; including art projects, science experiments, exploration walks around town, and so much more! This summer I will be offering a similar program, but each week a different theme will be covered.
Background
I was born and raised in Montana. I first came to Haines on a bicycle tour with my sister and it only took a couple minutes of being here to know that this would be a place that I would like to call home.
I went to the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana and received a B.A. in Elementary Education with a minor in Environmental Studies. I spent 2 years teaching 6th grade in Browning, Montana on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation before moving up to Haines. Working with children in the classroom is a joy but where I have really found my passion is in environmental and place-based education. I have taught at the Teton Science School in Kelly, WY, the Montana Natural History Center in Missoula, MT, and the Glacier Institute in Glacier National Park, MT. Currently, I am the 4th grade teacher at Haines Elementary.
